Bergen - Day Twenty!!! Part 1

What better way to start our day!

We are a little bit tired of the hotel buffet breakfast...they are plentiful and really good...but we are at about our fill of lox, eggs, meat and cheeses...

This Starbucks was very nice and of course the Venti Americano was even nicer! We grabbed our coffees and walked across the street to a bakery...turns out it's an Organic bakery...we had a couple pastries and a juice with our coffee and sat outside...great view of the buildings and up the street is a gorgeous old church...REMEMBER to click on the images to get a better view, if you'd like :)

In some areas you see this...I think they are doing that just to show the previous street...

Today's touring itinerary consists of the Gamle Bergen Museum...which is one of the oldest museum sites in Bergen...

Construction began before WWII...they have been moving old heritage buildings to this location in order to construct this re-created town...up until just recently the government would allow this. Now Heritage buildings in Norway need to stay where they are...much like it is in my country today.

This is the view up the street as we enter the official 'museum'...

Now at the top of the street we waited for our 'tour' guide...she doesn't show us around but instead gives us an idea about the history of this town and what the scenario is in some of the buildings...for example, what class level lived in what building, how many people lived in some of the houses, which ones were moved here, when the construction of the 'museum' site stopped after the German occupation here...they actually took over one of the large brick buildings to use as their administration building in Bergen...seeing as this site is along the water before entry to the port, I imagine it was a good spot to 'occupy'...

Here is their Dentist's office...we are taking photos through glass doors...so they aren't always the 'best' shots ;)

As you can imagine, several of these buildings are also sloped...so as we walk through them we are needing to adjust our steps a bit...

It's very pronounced here around the door frame and ceiling trim...

Now here you need to watch your step!

Several buildings had character actors in them...this fellow minds the letters, important papers and packages as well as the extrememly heavy safe which stores peoples money...this was before they had 'post offices' or 'banks'...

This was a scary room...old toys...right out of a horror movie...good thing is was a bright day...creepy old houses and dolls that'll give you nightmares ;)

I did love all the hand embroidery on this doll though...she would have been an expensive doll in the day...

Early signs of scrapbooking!

Great little candy store! He even started up the gramophone for us!

I even bought a bag of candy from him!

This photo below is of a home that housed eight children...every night they would move the furniture and sleep everyone...and in the morning they would set it back up like this again...

This parlour was in the home of a slightly wealthier person...

Now as Auntie June called this place...the hairdressers or 'torture chamber'...can you see that hanging thing with the clips attached to them? This is an electric curler...so you would attach your hair to the clips and the unit is plugged in...sounds a little sketchy...could you imagine if their was a power surge or short...would you end up with electric shock therapy to the brain or just fried hair?!!
Cute little station here to get your nails done though...featuring my favourite colours too! TEAL!!!
This tiny house between these two larger ones has a mannequin of a sailor inside it...also some woodworking bits...not sure on the history/story of it but they weren't rich by the same standards...

Here's a building that they have converted into a restaurant during the summer tourist season and the rest of the year it can be rented out for events...

We stopped for a coold drink and snack...

Nancy combined the snack and cold drink into a smoothie...the rest of us had ice cream and Barb chose chocolate cake!

The flowers everywhere we went were gorgeous! So many roses in bloom and other familiar plants and flowers...
